Tow Ball Weight for Hyundai ix35

Post by brianc » Tue Feb 21, 2017 5:10 pm

We own a 2002 Coromal 440 Pioneer off road camper trailer with a ATM1460kgs. Due to the Teg hitch it is impossible to weigh for the ball weight however my estimates from rough weighing is 190 kgs. It appears that Coromal do not produce a ball weight each manufactured unit has varied weights.

It was suggested by Pedders that ball weight generally is GTM 1350 - ATM 1460 = 110kg ball weight. We are trying to decide on what added suspension we need for our Hyundai ix 35 with a ball weight of 160kgs, air bags/heavier springs, WDH when the van is fitted to the car the tow ball drops 75mm

Welcome any suggestions Coromal have not been helpful :|

Hi brianc,

May I suggest on your way out for your next trip fully loaded you drop into a public weighbridge & have the trailer weighed including your ball weight, this way you will have your correct weights to calculate from. We had our campers weight & ball weighed which cost $25.

There is a method using your bathroom scales to find the ball weight of a trailer by weighing at the one third point of a length of wood. Then times the result by three for the correct weight. A picture says a thousand words

A good rule of thumb to follow is to have your ball weight around 10% to 15% of the trailers weight. That is if your trailer weights 1400kg the ball with be around 140kg to 210kg.
