Post by jw2170 » Sun Jul 05, 2015 12:01 pm

Just adding to the knowledge bank.

Which is preferred and why?

Also, the only source I can find is in US. Where have members purchased theirs.

Is a clone copy from eBay any good/

I bought one from ABR Sidewinder which seems to do the job.
I have no idea if it is a Watts Up or Dr Watson.

Hi Jim & Maree,

Some of the cheap $10 to $20 Watts Up meter copies go blank when connected between a solar panel & some 12volt battery chargers like the Redarc BCDC1225, however they seem to work ok between the battery & a 12volt accessory like a fridge, LED lights etc.

I do not know of an Australian source for the Watts Up meter http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... er_2_.html

I think the Watts Up & the Doc Watson are made by the same company http://www.rc-cars-planes.com/docs/wu10 ... manual.pdf

Jaycar have a similar meter http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Products ... t/p/MS6170

I built my Watts Up meter into a jiffy box with Andersons & cigarette socket & plug http://www.campertrailers.org/watts_up_meter.htm

I have decided to purchase the unit from Jaycar as I have now bought a 160W solar panel.

Any chance, Rob, that you could show how the wires are connected up inside the jiffy box?

Hi Jim & Maree,

On the source end of the Watts Up meter as an example, the wires from the Anderson & cigarette plug are soldered together with a wire that goes to the Watts Up meter. The bear wires are insulated with heat shrunk.

The wire off the Watts Up & from the soldered wires are joined with a insulated screw connector so I could take the Watts out easily if needed.

I also put a cable tie around each wire before it comes through the jiffy box so there is no pressure on the wiring joints.

A picture says a thousand words.....
