Lead doesn't fit plug?

Post by Dexdoggy » Mon Apr 24, 2017 8:54 am

Hi all! Hope someone can assist...
We have a caravan style 240v input on our camper trailer, although to date we have never used it! We normally just trickle charge our battery at home and that runs our water pump (and on rare occasions LED lighting) for the whole time we are away.It is a Clipsal plug, for 15A input. Even after 10 days away the battery has never been less than 1/2 charged.

We have an upcoming trip where we will be staying at a place that has power (no unpowered sites!) so we figure we may as well make use of it and to that end I went and purchased a proper "caravan" 15A (with the big earth pin!) lead. However, for the life of me I can't get this lead to plug in! There is a hard clear plastic "lip" (to resist the weather) around the end, and it prevents the lead plugging into the trailer plug! Does anyone have any ideas what we are doing wrong??? Maybe an older style plug???

I'm thinking this is a collar? If so just slice it off with a craft knife.

It's there to stop some stray bit of metal getting in between plug and socket and going live.

Hello Ern,

Yes it is just a plastic collar...

Hi Rick & Cherrie,

The genuine 15amp Clipsal caravan inlet should be a standard fitting. I would be looking at the 15amp lead. Did you buy it from a caravan accessory outlet or from Bunnings??? If from Bunnings the plug on the lead may be of any outer diameter & not necessarily of a standard caravan size???

Hi robcaz,
I did buy it from Bunnings but it does say it is for caravans and definitely 15A.
The Clipsal inlet however from what I can gather is an old (pre 2006) type that is still available and doesn't accept the collar on the lead.

I hope you are not talking about the clear plastic cover that is put on new leads to protect them from being bent.
If so you just pull it off.
I have an old Clipsal inlet plug and new leads fit .
