Sir Hans Heysen's camper trailer

Post by robcaz » Mon Dec 11, 2017 9:57 am

Hi all,

In 2012 after attending a wedding in Adelaide we headed to Burra where Mike had arranged a members weekend get together at Princess Royal Station http://www.campertrailers.org/princess_ ... eekend.htm as we passed through on our way for a few weeks camping & exploring the Flinders Ranges.

After the wedding we had a little time to kill so drove to the Adelaide Hills for a look around. By chance we visited The Cedars in Hahndorf, home of artist Sir Hans Heysen http://www.hansheysen.com.au/index.html A tour of the home & studio which are run by volunteers was about to start so we joined in.

While looking around the property I spotted the old camper trailer & inquired if it could be pulled out of the shed so I could take some photos. One of the volunteers asked Allan Campbell the manager. He in turn rang Peter Heysen, Sir Hans Heysens grandson. He said no problem & we arranged a time later in the week for him to pull the camper out of the shed & to my surprise set it up.

It just so happened an original copy of his biography, Heysen of Hahndorf by CM Thiele was for sale. I read every inch of the book that referred to the Flinders & the camper trailer. This really made our trip into the Flinders even more exciting as we looked for places Sir Hans Heysen had been & painted.
