Geoff Eather reports on the successful first Boggabri camping weekend

Boggabri Lions Club held its first Caravan, Motorhome, Camper and Tent (and any other means of camping out) Weekend from Friday 28th April to Monday 30th April 2006. This proved a very successful weekend for our first attempt with 28 vans, motorhomes, tents and campers.

They started to arrive from just before lunch on Friday and we were able to let them pick the spot they liked best because we have plenty of room. Later in the day we got the campfire going and had stews in camp ovens for dinner then we sat around the fire listening to tales and poems.

Saturday we had breakfast (bacon, eggs, sausages, tomato and toast).  Then we had a bus tour of a cotton farm, a bbq lunch with a further tour of the cotton gin in the afternoon. Also on Saturday we had several stalls. Saturday night saw us around the campfire again this time for a baked meal out of camp ovens. More stories and singing.

Sunday again started with breakfast. Then we had a community church service in the old hall that was well attended. Most people went and had a look at Boggabri, the museum, the opp shop and a general look around. BBQ lunch and a time to recover in the afternoon before the campfire at night. We cooked a stew and gave everyone that had stayed a free meal. Some of the ladies cooked dampers and they were delicious with local honey and golden syrup.

Monday the last of the visitors left by mid morning.

Everyone said what a great weekend and asked us to set the date for next year which we did 28th 29th April 2007. The weekend will have a theme of “The Drovers Campfire”. More details later.
