With fewer of us constrained by work
commitments, the Australia Day long weekend camp has for the past several
years become a week-long event.
The first arrivals on Wednesday helped clear the path to the swimming hole -
always the first task required after a year of rainforest growth. The
clean-up around the Den this year moved old timbers and rubbish from the
site. The general grounds maintenance this year resulted in an enormous pile
of dead wood that needed to be burnt. Challenge accepted! So in spite of the
heat we had two fire rings burning almost continually.
Once again we jagged the very hot weather with only one night of rain. We
were very lucky given that we had enjoyed a magnificent light show from the
clusters of storms around us. With the daytime temperatures in the mid
thirties we spent quite a bit of time cooling off in the river in between
talking and more talking.
This year we had the pleasure of camping with Shane, Kim and their
delightful granddaughter Ryleigh. They travelled from the Taree area to join
us - a great effort with a young passenger. We also had a morning visit by
two of our own grandchildren on Saturday so the trio of little ones enjoyed
games and crafting together. On Saturday we were visited by a two other
couples that were unable to camp this time - thank you for your company too.
Australia Day lunch was a shared feast with flavours from around the world.
Although this was unintentional, it reminds us of the diversity of cultures
and their impacts on our lives in Australia.
Thank you to everyone who came and camped with us at Canungra this year.
Special thanks to our NSW attendees - hope we see you up here again. Huge
thanks to everyone that participated in the grounds clean up over the week.
It was another happy camp and it's always a great way to start off the new
year. So.... we think we might just do it again next year. Keep an eye out
for the next Australia Day camp dates.
