Re: Apps
I am fast becoming an app addict.
I have a wifi and gps capable ipad with a telstra data card.
Apps I use most are Camps Australia,Hema 4wd,Road Trip, wiki camps, and Camp Aspect.
When in telstra range apple Maps and Google maps with their turn by turn direction are excellent.
I also have a Hema navigator. It has all Hemas maps whereas their App is much less comprehensive though recently upgraded.

RACV Vehicle Connect http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/ ... ed+vehicle
Museum of Vic Fauna app - free, for iOs and Android, and pretty good.
Morecombe's bird guide - c. $30. Not overly impressed.
Bought a Samsung phone for Vehicle Connect and for Navigon for an upcoming NZ trip. Took a lot of to and fro with the developer to get that app to work and the quality isn't brilliant. But the prices car rental places charge to add a GPS are stupid.
Otherwise an assortment of GPS utilities; Open Street Maps are worth a look.
