AT THE DAM

Explore the surrounds. National parks are not too far away. The is bushwalking & plenty of peace & quite for nature lovers. If you're a birdlover, look out for the native Regent Honeyeaters.                                                                        

Fishing. Copeton Waters is renown as a top Murray Cod, Yellowbelly, Redfin & Jew fishery. Upstream of the lake is some pristine gorge country that holds the odd Cod & Yellowbelly. The river below the Dam holds some trout. more>>>>>

On the water. Copeton Dam offers canoeing & sailing.                                                                                                           

Kids.Twin waterslide & two children's adventure playgrounds                                                                                               

Golf course. Six-hole golf course & hire boats

NATIONAL PARKS

Kings Plains National Park is 48km north east from Inverell. Facilities include pit/composting toilets, picnic tables. Need to be  self sufficient - bring your own water. There are no camping fees.  more>>>>>

Kwiambal National Park is 90 kilometres north of Inverell. Facilities at the camping area include pit/composting toilets, picnic tables, wood barbecues. Attractions include walking, swimming & fishing. Need to be  self sufficient - bring your own water.  There are no fees. more>>>>>

Mount Kaputar National Park is 100km west of Inverell.  Facilities include drinking water, flush toilets, amenities block, hot showers, picnic tables, electric/gas barbecues & wood barbecues. Attractions include bushwalking, lookouts & the volcanic features like the sawn rocks, the highest point in the park Mt Kaputar. more>>>>>

 

CONSERVATION AREAS

Torrington State Conservation Area is a two hour drive north east from Inverell, on mostly-sealed roads.  Facilities include pit/composting toilets, picnic tables & wood barbecues. Attractions include walking, lookouts & fossicking. Need to be  self sufficient - bring your own water. There are no fees. more>>>>>

Stonewoman Aboriginal Area is 22 km south-east of Inverell.  The rock feature used by local Aboriginal people as a teaching and ceremonial site. A sign prepared in collaboration with local Aboriginal groups tells the story of a young woman punished for breaking traditional marriage laws. You'll need to carry drinking water and allow one hour in total for the 1 km walk from the carpark. Day area only. more>>>>>

 

NATURE RESERVES

Mount Yarrowyck Nature Reserve is south east of Inverell, 30 km west of Armidale & protects an Aboriginal cave painting site and much of the natural environment of Mount Yarrowyck. There is a 3 kilometre return walking track. This is a day area only. more>>>>>

Mother Of Ducks Lagoon Nature Reserve is 37 kilometres north of Armidale & is a rare high-country wetland. You can walk around the lagoon on top of the levee bank, but there is no formal graded walking track or boardwalk system. Day area only. more>>>>>

Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve is south east of Inverell about 50 kilometres south of Glen Innes. It contains one of the few remaining high altitude freshwater lagoons on basalt soil on the New England Tableland of NSW. The easy 4.8 km walking track around the lagoon has good vantage points from which to see the waterbirds and lagoon. more>>>>>

Goonoowigall Bushland Reserve was gazetted in 1976 as a Reserve for Public Passive Recreation and Preservation of Native Flora and Fauna. The Reserve has an area of 900 hectares (2200 acres) and is situated five km south of Inverell. It has a number of picnic spots and an extensive system of well graded walking tracks that traverse the Reserve. more>>>>

 

MUSEUMS

Inverell Transport Museum is located just off the Bannockburn Road on the northern side of Inverel. One of Australia's largest collections of transport memorabillia includes cars, trucks, fire engines, motorcycles, tractors, bicycles, pedal cars, scooters & numerous models & transport related items make up the ever changing display. As well as a huge variety of the more popular makes of vehicles there are some rare and exotic creations on display, such as the 1906 Reliable Dayton, Moon, Diana, Turcat Mery, Chenard Wackler and Bristol can only be seen at the Museum more>>>>>

Wing Hing Long Heritage Museum This store provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of Chinese settlers in regional New South Wales. The Wing Hing Long Store provided the inhabitants of Tingha, a remote settlement near Inverell in the north west of the State, with everything from grain to knitting needles for over 80 years during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. more>>>>>

Salter's Hotel Museum in Bingara is a local history museum at 16 Maitland St. It is thought to be the town's first tavern and certainly the oldest surviving structure in town. It was built in 1860 of pit-sawn and hand-adzed slabs on a log floor and retains its original roof of imported puddling iron. The museum possesses a working smithy and a small school, as well as gems, minerals, photographs, bric-a-brac and furniture.

 

ZOOS

Green Valley Farm is located 35km from Inverell. The Zoo features monkeys, dingos, emus, wombats, camels and much more. There is a waterslide for the young and old, 18 hole mini golf course, swimming pool, merry go round, fun and physical play ground and tennis court. The museum offers an amazing collection of weird and strange things together with antiques, bottle, minerals among other many interesting displays. more>>>>>

 

FOSSICKING

Inverell has three free sapphire-fossicking areas where anyone is welcome to try their luck. They are Pindaroi Lake, Bukkulla; Fraser Creek, Nullamanna; and Swanbrook Creek, Swanbrook Road. All the fossicking areas have water but no staff on site. Equipment must be hired from the Inverell tourist centre along with maps showing exactly where the fossicking areas lie.

Poolbrook Gems Fossicking Park offers advice on sapphire fossicking, new sapphire wash, hire of fossicking equipment, view mining plant in operation, scenic bushland picnic sites, bush camping (no facilities yet). more>>>>>

Conrad & King Conrad Silver Mines This historic area features the mine sites of the Conrad and King Conrad Silver Mines. Part of the experience is a guided tour of these sites with Gary Kemlo. Gary's knowledge of the whole area is amazing. History of the mines and the township of Howell. Mining & assaying equipment on display and models of underground tunnels. more>>>>>

Billabong Blue Fossicking Park is situated 27 km from Inverell & offers the excitement of discovering sapphires at their fossicking park. Open 10am -4pm Wednesday to Sunday. $20 per person, $40 per family. Price includes all equipment. 7 Oaks Sapphires Sapphires Inverell operates a private mining tenure at its "7 Oaks" deposit near Inverell. A tourist fossicking facility is also provided for visitors. Entry to the facility is by prior arrangement only. more>>>>>   

Three Creeks Gold Mine & fossicking is located15 km south of Bingara. There is also a working gold mine, bushwalks and tours of old mine shafts are carried out by the owner. There is also bush camping, panning and fossicking and a small museum of mining-related artefacts.

 

DISPLAYS

The Draught Horse Centre is located 4km from Inverell amidst lawns and gardens by the Macintyre River. See the different breeds Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire, Suffolk Punch and Australian Draught horses in their historic rock stables. learn their origins, see the display of harnesses and memorabilia from the Working Horse Era Museum. The horses are paraded twice daily (at 11.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.)  & open Thursday to Monday from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and seven days in the school holidays.  more>>>>>

Gwydir Olives Pty Ltd is a olive processing plant. The factory at 35 Brissett Street is open for inspection. more>>>>>  

Morris's Honey Farm is 4 km along the Copeton Dam Rd which has a train ride through the park to see a working demonstration, a chance to taste local honeys, a native bird aviary, a bottle museum, a gem display with a sapphire cutter and polisher in attendance and a range of souvenirs for sale. All Nations Stamper Battery is found at the southern end of Bingara. It was established around 1860 and was the last gold mine to close (in 1948). It developed into a large underground mine, operating at four levels in two shafts (the deepest being 100 m). It is situated at the top of Hill St. All that remains is the ten-headed stamper battery.

Gwydir Ranch Park Four Wheel Drive Recreation Area is situated in Copeton Dam Road in the scenic gorge country along the Gwydir River below the Copeton Dam, the Gwydir Ranch Park is an ideal spot for fishing, photography, swimming, and white river canoeing, all of which can be arranged with the owner. The Gem Centre located in the central business district is a great centre to see Inverell's fine sapphires first hand. Displays on cutting, polishing, facetting of stones is happily shown to the visitor. Fine examples of jewellery on display incorporating the local sapphire. WINERIES

Gilgai Winery is open 10am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 12pm-6pm Sunday. Closed Wednesday Afternoon. Wines are sold at the cellar door or by mail order & produces quantities of red and white and varietal wines. more>>>>>
