Hi Folks, We are heading to Tasmania in November, and want to visit some "off the normal tourist places". I am thinking of taking the track from Arthur River through the Arthur Pieman Conservation area, crossing the Piemann River, and ending up at Zeehan. Has anyone done this drive? Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has taken there camper trailer to Tasmania.
Thanking you,
Rod and Melanie Taylor, Lockyer Valley.

Hi Rod & Melanie,
I don't know if you are a member at 4x4Earth, but there is a long list of tracks to explore as well as camping locations off the beaten track http://www.4x4earth.com.au/

Yeah, that track is the Western Explorer and perfectly driveable. Just did it in high winds and heavy rain - very atmospheric. Traction's good but there are some steep and narrow sections - the steeps are bitumenised. Much of the rest is topped with silica so give your rig a good wash when you get out.
At a pinch you could set up at the Pieman R crossing in the commercial camp. Don't bother to ring and ask; they're bleeding hopeless.
Tassie weather is pretty thick on the W coast. Just be flexible. The winds almost defeated us when camping at the Manuka site in Arthur R. We enjoyed the red boat cruise on the Arthur - the sea eagles were spekky.
Time estimate is about 3 hours from AR to Zeehan but even if you don't camp at Pieman it's well worth taking some time to explore and do one of the walks. The Whyte R walk is an hour and a fab introduction to Tassie temperate rainforest.
Hope you have a great trip. There are lots of free camps in some great places around the island.
