zipper repair

Post by Aussie battler » Sun Apr 24, 2016 10:45 pm

On our most recent fishing trip to Southend on the limestone coast of SA the door zipper started to come apart after it was closed,I made several enquires about repairs and was told that the tent would have to be removed from the trailer to replace the zipper .A big job as they dont just clip off and refitting probably would be more difficult and the whole job would become fairly expensive .Eventually after talking to several people with campers we were told of a bloke in Mt Barker that could replace them with the tent still attached,I contacted him and arranged for him to repair it this weekend (anzac weekend ). We were very pleased with the freindly and quick service as we droped it off mid morning on friday and collected it saturday afternoon completed along with several other small jobs done on the tent .Price was very reasonable ,very happy with workmanship and service .

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Sometimes it may be just a simple job of gently closing the slider with a pair of pliers

I have a 1997 Campomatic .
My zips on the LH door and flyscreen started to split apart after being closed.

I tried the pinching with pliers with limited success.

I was able to buy a number of new double sided pull zip sliders for about $10 or so on ebay.

I split the zip at the top and fitted the new sliders with some fiddling about and the zips so far are completely cured.

I stitched across the zip so that the slider would not inadvertently slide off the top.

IMHO it is rarely the zip that dies just the sliders wear out from friction. I also now have painted the zips with dri lube.
Better than paying hundreds to remove the tent .

Selleys Ezy Glide is a dry lubricant containing PTFE which will not attract dirt & dust well suited to camper trailer zips.

That is what I used or the CRC equivalent thus the use of "paint" as it is a clear lacquer with PTFE in it.

The cover on our Soft Floor Zipper kept pulling apart as the slider had worn out, we got a quote for a zip replacement $200, as the zip was a No8 which nobody had a No8 chunky slider. We purchased a No10 YKK alloy slider, ran the hacksaw in the 10mm end approx 8mm and closed the hacksaw slot in the vice finishing with a No8 slider, closed the depth as mentioned in the above post and it worked perfect, a $2 conversion.
cheers

The blokes name is Greg Anderson and his phone number is 0457386166 . He is just out off the main street but I cant remember his address and it is not in his card ,but if you phone him he will give you directions . I have used the camper since and am very pleased with the job .cost was about $275 but that included some other small jobs
