peak hill wednesday breakfast
     Local butcher Dave Sharkey
along with helpers arrived bright & early Wednesday morning to prepare
cooking breakfast for the group. It wasn't long before a good queue formed with
the guys & girls dishing up sausage, egg & bacon rolls. We managed to raise $400
towards the local junior football club who are in need a funding. Hope this
money can be put to good use.      phfm88      Peter Herman from
local Peak Hill radio PHFM88 came down to
the showground to broadcast live with his mobile studio. As well as giving
everyone great entertainment for the day, he had plenty of prizes to give out.     Rob arrived later in
the day to show everyone his speedway car.    biodiesel
workshops      Hugh Davidson held
morning & afternoon biodiesel workshops which of course is a very interesting
subject for the travelers. Biodiesel is the name for diesel fuel made from
vegetable oils or animal fats. Today’s diesel engines require a clean burning,
stable fuel that performs well under a variety of operating conditions.
Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel that can be used directly in any
existing, unmodified diesel engine. Because it has similar properties to
petroleum diesel fuel, biodiesel can be blended in any ratio with petroleum
diesel fuel.      Hugh demonstrated how
to go about adding the necessary chemicals to the used vegetable cooking oil,
the process of how the fuel is separated from the byproduct of glycerin & the
contaminants. He then went on to show how to test the quality of the biodiesel.
   goldmine
tours     Guided tours of the
local Peak Hill open cut goldmine were conducted morning & afternoon in
conjunction with Parkes Shire Council. People were taken along
the walking paths and viewing platforms giving everyone an insight to both a modern
working mine & that of the early historic workings.     The mine operated
between 1893 and 1917 producing about 60,000 ounces from 500,000 tonnes of rock.
The company Alkane re-excavated for gold on the site between 1996 and 2002 retrieving
145,000 ounces of gold from 4.9 million tonnes of rock.
The Peak Hill Open Cut gold mine was re-developed in 2002 as
a Tourist Mine. In September 2007, Parkes Shire Council signed an agreement with
lease-holder Alkane Exploration committing to keep the project running, through
Council operating the tourist arm of the mine.
   evenings
entertainment      Local band Give 'em
Anything provided fantastic entertainment for the evening. They played 70's &
80's music which was well received by everyone. It wasn't long till the
majority were up dancing the night away. The hat was passed around & the group
raised $702 towards the Peak Hill preschool. Well done everyone.     A big thanks goes to
Amy Johnson from the Parkes Shire Council who found the band for us & also to
the members of the band who played for nothing so funding could be put back into
the community.    introductionmonday
